Due to the physical location of the eyelids, being surrounded by the nose, cheek and eyebrows, makes it not easily accessible to daily cleaning regimens. This combined with the oily/watery environment of the ocular surface and crust accumulation of the eyelashes make it a convenient location for infection by Staphylococci and Demodex mites.
Effective removal of the crusts/debris around the eyelid margin will reduce the possibility of bacterial infections, but also help reduce the negative effects on the meibomian glands. Cleaning with massage has shown to be more effective than just cleaning alone, so remembering to massage after every cleaning is important.
It's important to note that Soap and water washing does not have the effect on bacterial growth on the eyelids that people expect. Especially since soap, even baby soap, in the eyes are very uncomfortable. This combined with the oil reducing properties of soap are not beneficial to the oil layers in your tears, causing disruption and damage to the eyelid lipid layer.
