TearLab Osmolarity Testing for Dry Eyes

A white handheld electronic device with a curved design, featuring a textured grip and a green accent near the top. It is set against a gradient purple background.

How Does TearLab Work?

The TearLab Osmolarity System* is intended to measure the osmolarity (the saltiness of your tears) of tears to help in the diagnosis of dry eye disease.

The TearLab provides a quick method for determining tear osmolarity using your own tear fluid collected directly from your eyelid.

A person holds a handheld device near a womans eye, pressing gently on her lower eyelid. The woman appears calm, with makeup and earrings visible, as she looks upwards. The background is a soft grey.

During the Test

Your eye doctor will take a sample of tears from each eye and use the TearLab device to measure osmolarity (the saltiness of your tears). As osmolarity in your tears increase ocular surface cells become damaged. Your doctor will need an amount of tear fluid no larger than the period at the end of this sentence.
